Car Review: 2011 Hyundai Sonata

hyundai-sonata-2011
Car Review: 2011 Hyundai Sonata - Paul Hagger: Hyundai Sonata continues the modern tradition of Hyundai to compete at all levels, even if it can be a star in any field. It's cheaper than the comparable Toyota and Honda competition, but has an engine that is in every way and an interior that is actually a little better. The Sonata is a pleasure to drive and offers a friendly and sophistication, I've never met a Hyundai before.

Perry Stern: The all-new Hyundai Sonata is one of the best family sedans on the market. The new design is large enough to distinguish it from its competitors while ignoring unusual. The interior of the car is very clean with quality materials and control simple and straightforward. With a fuel consumption rating of 35 mpg highway and the removal of a V6 engine available, I was pleasantly surprised that the power does not fail at all. The 200-horsepower 4-cylinder with automatic transmission 6-speed is all you need for most situations. But the best part of the Sonata is fantastic. A nice looking family sedan with plenty of space for luggage and passengers, Bluetooth, navigation, automatic transmission and a 10-year, 100,000 km Warranty for $ 24K is an incredible deal.

Hyundai Veloster Will Have Four Doors, Not Three

Potential Honda CR-Z rival switches things up a bit, not too sure what to think.... is it now just a hatchback?!? Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing what Hyundai has planned.... Looking at the pic, it looks like they did just add a 2nd door on the passenger side....
Hyundai will be debuting its all-new Veloster at the Detroit Auto Show next Monday. Long expected to be a three-door hatch in the vein of the Honda CR-Z, the Veloster has a trick up its sleeve: an extra door. Hyundai released a new teaser photo of the hatch today, and as you can clearly see there are two passenger-side doors instead of one. Look across the rear seats and you’ll notice there’s no rear door on the other side. So the Veloster will feature an unconventional three door + hatch configuration.

Hyundai hasn’t given us much information on the Veloster, but it dropped a few select details when it released the first teaser photo. We’ll get the rest beginning January 10 at 2:55 p.m. Eastern. [via CNET]

Honda, Hyundai issue anti-used-parts memos, junkyards object

The Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) issued a formal complaint letter with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against two car manufacturers, Hyundai Motor America and American Honda. Both companies released statements that warn against the use of recycled auto parts, and indicate that their use will void vehicle warranties issued by the companies. ARA said those statements and their threatened warranty refusals could be violations of the Magnuson-Moss Act.

Use of these recycled parts, a $22-billion industry, has been widely accepted for decades and there is a long track record of their successful use, ARA said. Recycled parts are original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. They are fully functional and are in many cases identical to the original parts Hyundai Motor America and American Honda are requiring, according to ARA. Recycled parts were new OEM parts at some point, yet both Hyundai Motor America and American Honda are calling for the use of their own new parts in repairs.

“Neither manufacturer has provided any evidence that parts unaffected by an accident become inadequate once reused, which begs the question why their use is not supported by either company,” ARA’s Chief Executive Officer Michael E. Wilson states in his appeal to the FTC.
“Following the logic held by these companies, as soon as a new Hyundai, Honda or Acura drives off the lot, its parts are unsuitable for use as replacement parts in another vehicle, implying that the parts are unfit for use as soon as the car drives off the lot.”

In addition, recycled parts have several additional benefits compared to new parts:
Recycled parts allow consumers to save on costs while using parts identical to new OEM parts.

Recycled parts are better for the environment, since no additional resources or energy were used to create an unnecessary new replacement part.

Auto recyclers provide warranties on any recycled part used in a repair, indicating that recycled parts are not used in an attempt to cut corners with customers. "We believe the statements made by Hyundai Motor America and America Honda are part of a concerted effort among automobile manufacturers to limit competition in the automotive parts market to try to limit their competition,” said Wilson.

Kia's top executive resigns after recalls

A little drastic I think, but I guess they are using this as a platform to show how serious they take these issues.... after all, they have been on quite a run lately....
Kelly Olsen / Associated Press

Seoul, South Korea -- The top executive at Kia Motors has resigned after the company recalled more than 100,000 vehicles worldwide over defective wiring, the automaker said Tuesday.
Chung Sung-eun, vice chairman and CEO of South Korea's No. 2 automaker, stepped down on Friday, according to company spokesman Michael Choo.

"His resignation comes in the light of the recent global recall issued by Kia Motors," Choo said, without elaborating. He said no successor has been named. Chung was one of two Kia CEOs.

Kia Motors Corp. is an affiliate of South Korea's top automaker, Hyundai Motor Co. Together they form the world's fifth-largest automotive group.

Chung's resignation comes amid a wave of recalls that have shaken the global auto industry since Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. began calling in vehicles in October last year. The world's top automaker has recalled more than 10 million vehicles for problems including faulty gas pedals and floor mats.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo asked Chung to step down to take responsibility for the recalls as they suggested possible quality problems.

Neither Choo nor Hyundai Motor spokeswoman Song Meeyoung could confirm the report.
Chung, the former Kia executive, is no relation to the Hyundai chairman, Choo said.

Early this month Kia issued a global recall totaling 104,047 vehicles for a defect in electric wiring that controls mood lighting inside the car and could cause heat-related damage, according to Choo. Of that total, 35,185 vehicles were recalled in the United States, he said.

Seoul-based Kia has a complex management system. Though Chung held the top rank, day-to-day operations come under the control of two presidents: Hank Lee for overseas operations and Seo Young-jong for domestic operations, according to Choo. Seo also holds the title of CEO, said Pamela Munoz, a Kia spokeswoman.

Kia, which posted a 61 percent surge in second-quarter net profit, manufactures vehicles in South Korea as well as at overseas plants in China, Slovakia and the U.S.

The company's stock price fell 0.2 percent to close Tuesday at 33,400 won ($28.38). Kia shares tripled in value in 2009.

Here Are The 10 Brands That Will Disappear In 2011 - KIA?!?!?

I don't claim to be a expert like these guys but I can't see this happening....

Kia Motors Corporation is one of the two car brands of Hyundai of South Korea. It has always been a marginal brand. Its stable mate, Hyundai USA, has a reputation for high quality cars like the Sonata and Genesis. Kia sells “low rent” cars and SUV nameplates like the Sorento and Rio.
As GM and Ford have already discovered, it is expensive to maintain multiple brands and storied car names, including Pontiac, Saturn, and Mercury, are disappearing.
Most Kia cars sell for $14,000 to $25,000. Hyundai has several cars in the same price range.
Hyundai’s Sonata has quickly become one of the best-selling cars in America, and its Genesis flagship model competes with mid-sized BMWs and Mercedes. The parent company will take a page from several other global car companies and dump its weakest

Me too!: 2012 Hyundai Veloster expected to breach the 40 mpg barrier

I can't help but think that what Honda and Toyota took 50 years to achieve, Hyundai is trying to accomplish in a short amount of time, alot of this seems rushed, only time will tell. Their cars are sure looking nicer, I'll give them that, and only time will really tell if they are on the right track. Competition's healthy though.

Hyundai’s upcoming small sports coupe will pierce the 40 miles-per-gallon barrier, according to Hyundai Motor America president John Krafcik.

In an interview at Los Angeles, Krafcik told reporters that with this figure, its coupe will be able to beat the new 2011 Honda CR-Z, which, which despite having a hybrid powertrain, achieves only 36/39 city/highway when equipped with a CVT and 31/37 with a manual gearbox. The Hyundai coupe, which could be named either Veloster or Tiburon, will be able to achieve those figures with a conventional four-cylinder engine, avoiding the additional cost, complexity and weight of a gas-electric system. Krafcik gave assurances that this model will beat the Honda in fuel economy and will also perform better as well as provide added utility, including rear seats and better access. Krafcik explained that since its coupe isn’t powered by a highly expensive hybrid drivetrain, it’s likely to be priced lower. Krafcik told Autoblog that the coupe will appeal to the world’s younger generation and increasingly auto-ambivalent consumers with additional technology. All Velosters are fitted with a large screen on the dashboard as standard equipment to manage connectivity features aside from the more conventional vehicle functions.

Honda Not Seeing Big Benefit From Toyota’s Slide

It is an industry maxim that consumers who consider buying a Toyota in the U.S. almost exclusively cross-shop Honda, and vice versa.

However, despite Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc.’s recent unintended-acceleration woes, American Honda Motor Co. Inc. has lost market share in the U.S. in 2010, signaling it is not benefitting as much from Toyota’s share slide as other competitors.

Toyota’s slice of the U.S. light-vehicle pie stood at 15.4% through April, down from 16.1% in like-2009.

Including both Acura and Honda brands, Honda’s U.S. share has slipped to 10.5% in the same period, down from 11.0% year-ago, Ward’s data indicates, in spite of an 11.5% increase in sales volume.

The Honda brand is to blame for the entire 0.5-point drop, with Acura’s U.S. market share holding steady at 1.1%.

While Honda-brand penetration rebounded in April from March, rising to 10.5% from 9.1%, the April figure remains below the 11.3% share of the U.S. market it commanded in April 2009.

Two vehicles in particular are behind the decline, the midsize Accord and compact Civic.
The Accord controlled 5.3% of the total car market through April, vs. 5.6% year-ago. The Civic’s penetration slipped to 4.4% from 5.1% in like-2009.

The two models are Honda’s highest-volume vehicles, with the Accord the No.2 best-selling car in the U.S. this year and the Civic close behind at No.4.

On the light-truck side, the Odyssey minivan and Element cross/utility vehicle each have lost 0.1 points of market share from year-ago.

The greatest beneficiaries of a stumbling Honda and Toyota are Ford Motor Co. and Nissan North America Inc.

Ford is the biggest gainer in the U.S. light-vehicle market through April, taking a 17.1% slice of the sector, up from 14.9% year-ago.

Nissan’s share has jumped to 8.3% from 7.4% in like-2009, with the entire increase attributable to the mass-market Nissan brand.

General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet brand has moved up to 13.4% from 12.0% in the same period, while Subaru of America Inc. has continued its sales and market-share streak into 2010. After posting the biggest sales gain in the U.S. last year, Subaru’s volume is up 41.1% through April; and its market penetration has risen to 2.3% from 1.9% year-ago.

The Volkswagen brand has seen its share rise, as well, to 2.3% from 1.9%.

While Hyundai Motor America has gained just 0.1 points of share this year, data from Web analytics firm Compete Inc. indicates the new Hyundai Sonata midsize sedan, along with Ford’s Fusion, may be hurting the Accord.

Compete data shows cross-shopping of the Sonata and Fusion by Accord shoppers has surged to or near record highs.

“Essentially, Ford Fusion, as well as the Hyundai Sonata, is of much more interest to Honda Accord shoppers than it has been in the past,” says Dennis Bulgarelli, director-Automotive for Compete. “Both of those now are Top 10, if not Top 5, models shopped by (Toyota) Camry and Accord people.”

American Honda spokesman Chuck Schifsky shrugs off 2010 market-share losses, saying the auto maker sets sales, rather than share, targets. He points out American Honda sales were up through April, gaining 9.7% according to Ward’s data.

“Market share isn’t always a good indicator of success,” he says. “In late 2008 and 2009, our market share went up, even though our sales went down – due to the fact other car companies’ sales fell at a quicker pace than ours. We didn't fall as far (last year), so our gains (this year) won't be as dramatic.”

Schifsky says Honda is happy with the Accord. Sales of domestically built models, the vast majority of Accords sold this year, are up 24.6%.

Bulgarelli notes interest by Accord buyers in the Sonata, in particular, may be short-lived, if history is a guide.

“Remember when the (Chevy) Malibu came out? That got a lot of attention from Accord and Camry people too, but that level of interest wasn’t necessarily maintained in the long run.

“We’re seeing it maintained for Fusion,” Bulgarelli continues. “The question is will Sonata be able to maintain that as well?”

2010 Honda Accord EX vs. 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE, 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5i - Comparison Tests

Here's a really good comparison test between three really good cars....
Practically Chic: Does style really matter in these mid-size schleppers armed with just four cylinders and slushboxes?

For all the ascendance of crossovers—certainly the most amoebic of all automotive classifications—mid-size sedans continue to be one of autodom’s biggest sales categories. There are many reasons for this—all-around family usefulness, resistance to the swollen SUV bulk of crossovers, respectable fuel economy—but double-take glamour is rarely one of them.

This mid-size dedication to stylistic timidity has always mystified us. Given a choice between two implements that function with more or less equal efficiency, wouldn’t you be inclined to pick the one that looks the best? This is not a trick question. As a Detroit design chief observed long ago, “If practicality was all that mattered, they’d have to put a roof over Kalamazoo so they could build enough Checkers to satisfy demand.”

Checker sedans were terrific taxicabs. But their mass-market appeal was limited. Kalamazoo was never in danger of requiring a big roof, and the factory shut down in 1982.

It’s true that several purveyors of mid-size sedans have tried to raise the curbside wattage of recent offerings—the Chevy Malibu, Ford Fusion, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima, and even the Toyota Camry have all snazzed up a couple of notches compared with their predecessors. But how many actually turn heads? Very few; none, maybe. Staying visible in a 15-minutes-of-fame society requires some risk taking. Daring. Chutzpah.

The 2006–’10 Hyundai Sonata played to solid reviews that praised, in particular, its extensive array of standard features and a marked improvement in overall quality. But it’s safe to say that the styling failed to provoke any oohs or aahs. Responses were more of the ho and hum variety.

If you’ve been following our previews and show coverage on our website, or if you saw Hyundai’s myriad Super Bowl commercials, you already know that the Sonata, like the ugly duckling, has matured into a handsome swan. If it’s not the sleekest thing in its class, we’d like to know what is.

Of course, looks aren’t everything. If they were, Megan Fox would be president. Or, perhaps even scarier, Sarah Palin. There’s gotta be substance, too, which, in our constituency, translates as supple ride, all-day comfort, decent power, competitive fuel economy, contemporary safety features, high-quality fit and finish, and, of course, a high fun-to-drive quotient.

How does the 2011 Sonata grade out on the full report card? The quickest way to place it in the mid-size-sedan continuum is to pit it against a couple of prominent players in this class. The new Subaru Legacy—redesigned inside and out for 2010—needed to be on the menu since it has yet to be tested against its peer group. And, of course, we had to include the reigning mid-size champ—the Honda Accord, a perennial 10Best Cars titlist (24 trophies in 28 years) and winner of our last three mid-size showdowns.

The group’s specifications were constrained by the Sonata’s powertrain limitations. The Accord and the Legacy both offer six-cylinder options, but the new Sonata’s only engine, at least for now, is a naturally aspirated four-cylinder; a manual transmission comes only in the base model. Thus we specified automatics and fours in all three cars—a combination that accounts for a little more than 80 percent of the mid-size, mid-price sedan market.

Our Sonata was the slightly sportier SE model. We requested a midrange Accord EX, and the Legacy was a basic 2.5i with a CVT automatic. Base prices ranged from $20,690 (for the Subaru) to $24,540 (the Honda).

Could one of these newbies knock the Accord off its throne? We assembled our threesome in Southern California to find out.

New car sales were strong in December; see last month's and last year's 20 top sellers

December's new car sales were the highest of any month in 2009, with many key models picking up significant volume and most automakers posting a sales gain over December 2008, but it wasn't enough to rescue the entire year.

The Ford F-Series full-size pickup and Toyota Camry midsize sedan were yet again the nation's favorite vehicle and car, respectively, both December and throughout 2009.
Ford also saw strong success from its redesigned Fusion midsize sedan, which jumped from 17th place in 2008 to a slot on the top-10 best-selling list of 2009, and its Focus compact and Escape midsize weren't far behind. The Escape was also the best-selling SUV in December, unseating the Honda CR-V that itself had stolen the crown from Ford's Explorer several years ago.

General Motors, meanwhile, had an excellent month for its Chevrolet Malibu midsize, which beat out the Fusion and Nissan's Altima in December to be the country's third-best-selling midsize sedan, behind the Camry and Honda Accord. The Chevrolet Equinox compact/midsize SUV also did well at over 12,000 units -- a record for the model -- and the compact Chevrolet Cobalt's sales improved from abysmal to just mediocre. GM did, however, see its best-seller -- the Chevrolet Silverado pickup -- slide below both the Toyota Camry and Corolla last month even as its own sales jumped significantly month-to-month. (see sales charts below the article)

In other Ford/GM news, the automakers' ongoing rivalry between the Mustang and Camaro retro muscle cars saw the Ford inch closer to the sales of its rival, narrowing a once-mighty gap to just over 1,000. This Mustang sales increase comes even as Camaro sales stay strong at 7,500 last month and in the same month that Ford announced it would give massive upgrades to next year's Mustang.

The top-ten list seems mostly familiar for the total of 2009, but some major changes in December suggest 2010 might be an interesting year for auto sales. See the two sales charts below:
